Solar Water Fountains FAQs
Answers to common questions about solar water fountains
General Solar Water Fountain Questions
Q:How do solar water fountains work?
A:Solar water fountains are powered by solar energy, meaning that they are powered by sunlight. Solar water fountains come with either a built-in or external rechargeable battery panel, and when placed in a well-lit area, the panel will power the pump within the fountain to propel and move the water.
Q:Where is the best place to put my solar water fountain?
A:Our solar water fountains are designed to work throughout the summer months and even throughout spring and autumn if positioned appropriately. It’s important to make sure that your solar water feature is placed somewhere with ample access to clear, constant lighting as performance is directly related to the amount and strength of the sunlight received. So, the brighter, the better when it comes to solar water fountains!
Q:How do I set up my solar water fountain?
A:Setting up your solar fountain is easy. Once you’ve picked out the perfect spot, you need to think about filling it with water. Distilled water is recommended as it prolongs the life of the pump. However, well-filtered water is also an option. This is as tap water may carry some debris from the water system which could irritate the pump and therefore impact your relaxing new water feature.
Be sure to follow the instructions included with your solar water fountain carefully to ensure the best outcome.
Q:Should I turn my solar water fountain off at night?
A:The beauty of having a solar powered water fountain is that you don’t need to worry about turning it on and off again.
Thanks to the rechargeable battery, your fountain will continue to run as long as it’s in a well-lit place, and the battery will power the pump throughout the evening - what’s even better is as it’s solar powered, there’s no additional cost to run your fountain!
If you ever did want to turn the fountain off, simply remove or cover the rechargeable solar battery.
Q:Why has my solar water fountain stopped working?
A:Your water fountain shouldn’t stop working, however, one of the main reasons this could happen is if it needs to be cleaned.
Small bits of debris can affect the lifespan of your pump, so it’s important that you keep an eye on this. An easy way of doing this is by changing the water regularly to reduce algae build up and adding a dash of white vinegar to keep it clean. Remember to also wipe any dust or dirt off the rechargeable solar panel.
Q:How do I clean the pump in my solar water fountain?
A:All fountain pumps come with a basic filter, but these can sometimes become clogged and need to be cleaned out. This can be done in three easy steps –
- Remove the water from the fountain and wipe down the bowl, being sure to wipe away any algae or dirt build up that may have developed with warm water.
- Remove the pump and clean this with warm water, being sure to wipe down the filter carefully.
- Wipe down the solar panel and refill the fountain with clean, well-filtered water and let the sun’s power do its thing.
Q:Will my solar water fountain work in the winter?
A:With little sun comes little power, so chances are that you may not experience the full impact of your fountain in the winter months. There’s also a risk that frozen water can impact the internal piping and pump.
We’d recommend storing your water fountain away during the colder months to reduce the chance of freezing and potentially damaging the pump. Be sure to clean both the fountain and pump properly before storing it away to get the maximum impact when you next bring it out in the summer months.
