Mapping Twinkly Lights
How to map Twinkly lights in 2D or 3D
You've got your Twinkly lights installed in your chosen location, you've connected to your WiFi and now you just need to map them before you start to explore the endless combinations of colours and effects. Mapping your Twinkly lights accurately is hugely important if you want to maximise the impact of your lights, so take the time to get this part right.
Some key things to remember are to avoid reflective surfaces behind the lights, to keep the camera steady (use a tripod if you have one) and to ensure the room is not too dark or too light.
You'll notice that you have the option to use 2D mapping or 3D mapping and we'll take a look at each in turn.
Twinkly lights 2D mapping
2D mapping is recommended for decorations that are set up on a flat surface:
- Front part of a Christmas tree
- Wall decorations
- Garlands or wreaths
- In the Twinkly App, navigate to 'layout' and select 'map lights' and then '2D mapping'
- Select 'start mapping'
- Ensure your lights are within the frame and wait for the time to elapse
- Wait for the app to generate your 2D layout, then select 'OK'
- You are all done and ready to enjoy your Twinkly lights
Twinkly Lights 3D mapping
3D mapping allows for 360 ° rendering, meaning more precise detection of each LED, and can be more suited to displays where lights can be visible from more than one single direction:
- Wrapped around the whole Christmas tree
- In the Twinkly App, navigate to 'layout' and select 'map lights' and then '3D mapping'
- Select 'start mapping'
- Ensure your lights are within the frame and wait for the time to elapse
- Move to a different angle of the lights and repeat the process for each take (this works best when you keep a part of the previously mapped section of lights within the frame)
- LEDs on the lights will turn from red > orange > yellow and eventually to green when fully mapped
- Select to 'add another' to continue mapping. Do this until the large majority of LEDs on your lights are green
- When happy, select 'I'm satisfied'
- Wait for the app to generate your 3D layout, then select 'OK'
- You are all done and ready to enjoy your Twinkly lights
Frequently asked questions
Q: When mapping, why are the LEDs not going red, orange and yellow as described?
A: If your Twinkly lights are part of the 'Gold Edition' range, the colour of the LEDs will change from warm white, when not mapped, to cool white when mapped. You can also visit Twinkly's help page for solutions for this, and other common issues.
